An Impossible Book (2011)

An Impossible Book is a wall-based installation of a book. The books title is derived literally from the impossible nature of attempting to bind a book with plastic bags partially filled with water.

The Cover is modge-podge and gel medium dried over a 4-month period touched by paint as well as ink and then title adhered by dry transfer letters.

This book was inspired by a conversation with Joe Kalturnyk about Peter Eisenman’s theoretical house in which you could not enter. Like Foucault notion of what you can not see being more exciting/interesting than what you can see, Eisenman space is expected behind the walls of the house, hinted at by a small visible space. The Skin I Live in, being Japanese stab bound and transparent suggests something is locked with the cover but what is “the pages” is left a mystery.

This was a collaborative project in which we each began with 6 transparencies and a week time frame. After that week was done we exchanged each other’s transparencies and had one week to add to the other’s work. When that week was over we got together and discussed the process and order for the pages. Being the pages were transparent it was very fun seeing the various connections between pages.

The theme/title for the artist book came from an interview with American artist Richard Serra in which he discussed a dialogue between material and form.
